Life Adviser Cover Calculator

Life Adviser Cover Calculator works out a life cover amount to consider from your mortgage, debts, living costs and existing cover. It can also work out a term from the years left on your mortgage and your youngest child’s age. It works in Claude and ChatGPT as an MCP connector.

How to add it

Add Life Adviser Cover Calculator as a custom MCP connector. Its server name is lifeadviser-cover-calculator and its tool is estimate_life_cover.

Claude

  1. Open Claude’s customisation menu, then Connectors.
  2. Add a custom connector and give it a name, such as Life Adviser Cover Calculator.
  3. Paste the connector URL shown above. It works on any Claude plan.

ChatGPT

  1. Open plugins in ChatGPT and select the plus button.
  2. Select Add custom MCP server.
  3. Enter a name and description.
  4. Enter the connector URL shown above and choose no authentication.
  5. Read the warning and continue.
  6. Create it as a plugin.

Adding a custom MCP server needs a Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu plan and works in ChatGPT on the web, not the mobile app, as OpenAI’s help page explains.

If it does not work

  • Check the connector URL was entered exactly as shown above on this page, with no spaces or other characters added.
  • In Claude, select the + button at the lower left of the chat, then Connectors, and switch the connector on. If asked how people connect, choose No sign in.
  • To change a custom connector in Claude, such as its URL, remove it and add it again. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner adds it first, then members connect it from Claude’s customisation menu, Connectors.
  • Use ChatGPT on the web, start a new chat, type @ in the prompt box and select the plugin. Selecting the plugin applies to that message only, so select it again for a follow up that needs new figures.
  • In a ChatGPT Business workspace, only admins and owners can add a custom MCP server. In Enterprise and Edu workspaces, admins can also allow selected members to add one.
  • If Life Adviser Cover Calculator still does not work, contact us through the contact page.

What it returns

  • A life cover amount to consider, in whole pounds.
  • A breakdown of the parts of the sum.
  • A term to consider and the figures behind it, when a term can be worked out.
  • Any funeral figure that was assumed.
  • The method and notes on the result.
  • A fixed disclaimer explaining the limits.
  • A link back to this page for the method and sources.

How the figures are worked out

The cover amount is the mortgage balance plus other debts plus (yearly household living costs times years of support) plus funeral costs, minus existing life cover. The result is never below zero and is rounded to the nearest pound.

This matches the Life Adviser life insurance calculator. The method clears the mortgage and debts as lump sums, funds household running costs for the chosen years and adds a funeral allowance, then subtracts existing cover. If no funeral figure is given, it uses the calculator page’s starting value of £5,000 and marks it as assumed.

The term uses this tool’s own method. It takes the longer of the years left on the mortgage and the years until the youngest child reaches the support age. The support age is 18 unless you give another age from 18 to 25. Life Adviser’s guide to term life insurance explains why the mortgage end date and when children might become financially independent matter when choosing a term.

If neither term figure is given, or neither leaves any years, it gives no term and explains which figures would give one. It gives no prices or premiums.

MoneyHelper explains that death in service benefit ends if you leave the employer. Its guide to life insurance also explains how a fixed payout buys less as prices rise and describes level, decreasing and increasing term cover. Decreasing cover reduces each year and is designed for repayment mortgages, where the loan goes down over time.

Limits

  • This is an illustration of a cover amount to consider. The figures are general and illustrative, not advice, a recommendation or a quote.
  • It only knows the figures it is given. The right amount and term depend on your own circumstances. A regulated financial adviser can help work out a suitable amount and term. MoneyHelper offers free, impartial guidance.
  • No prices, premiums, quotes, insurer names or ratings.
  • For the UK only, in pounds.
  • Life Adviser does not give advice or arrange policies. Its insurance role is introductions only.
